A short history
Albanians are autochthonous on their territory.
Formerly,
they lived in a larger territory than in that today's, but after
various invasions, they were obliged to fold up inside their current
borders.
Romans were the first to attack this country to have of it the
possession and to convert his inhabitants to Catholicism.
Later,
Albania was part of Byzance, which the majority population had
converted to orthodox religion.
In
the Middle Ages, the Albanians faced, heroically, during a quarter of
century the biggest empire of the XVth
century. A headed our national hero George Kastriote Skanderbeg.
The Albanians have also helped the Greek revolution of 1821.
After
the 5 centuries of slavery, the Albanians won their national
independence, but Europe admitted this independance on
only half the territories inhabited by Albanians. Two
years only after this independence, the first world war bursts and
Albania is transformed into battlefield. It is
after some years when the country finds peace.
In
1925 the first Albanian Republic was proclaimed. From
1928 till 1939 the country was governed by a monarch. During
World War II Albania is part of the big antifaschiste alliance
constituted by the allies.
From
1944 till 1990 the country is governed by Enver Hoxha and Ramiz Alia.
Country
made progress, but centralised economy had only not much met the needs
of the population. After
the fall of the Berlin Wall and the opening in democracy in Eastern
Europe, the Albanians could overturn the ancient communist regime.
Currently,
Albania is a parliamentary Republic which has just entered NATO and
that hopes to be part of the European Union.
